Tech Golfers Finish Fifth at Carpet Capital Collegiate

Oct. 5, 2003

Rocky Face, Ga. – Georgia Tech junior golfer Nicholas Thompson fired his second-straight 68 on Sunday, as the Yellow Jackets finished alone in fifth place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga. The 54-hole event was contested at the par-72, 7,010-yard Farm Golf Club.

Tech finished the third round with a team score of 4-under-par, 284, completing play in the tournament with an even-par score of 296-284-284-864. That total was 11 shots off the pace of team champion Florida, which finished the event at 11-under-par, 295-277-281-853.

Thompson was solid in the tourney, carding his two 68s over the final two rounds, to finish alone in eighth place at a season-best 5-under-par, 75-68-68-211. He recorded five birdies on the final day of play, but was still eight shots behind individual medalist Jason Hartwick of Texas, who finished at 13-under-par, 71-65-67-203.

Freshman Kevin Larsen was the next Yellow Jacket in the field, as he tied with four other players for 12th place at 1-under-par, 73-70-72-215, for the first top-20 finish of his young career. Junior Chan Wongluekiet followed Larsen in the individual standings, as he registered a pair of sub-par rounds over the final 36 holes and finished as one of three players tied for 30th place at 3-over-par, 77-71-71-219.

The final two members of the Tech contingent were sophomores Mike Barbosa (71-75-74-220) and Thomas Jordan (78-81-73-232), who tied for 33rd and 75th place respectively.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action in just over a week, when they travel to Birmingham, Ala., to compete in the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate on Oct. 13-14.
