Fort Myers, Fla. – Georgia Tech’s doubles team of Juan Spir and Vikram Hundal completed an undefeated weekend Sunday with a victory over Illinois, and Juan Melian captured his third straight singles victory Sunday as the Yellow Jackets completed their final dual match season tuneup in the Illini Open.
Spir and Hundal, the nation’s third-ranked doubles team, took an 8-4 victory over the Illini’s Alex Jesse and Ferris Gosea to improve their season record to 11-1. Eduardo Segura and Garrett Gordon defeated Brian Page and Ross Gignon, 8-4, to help the Yellow Jackets earn a split of their four doubles matches with 16th-ranked Illinois.
Tech was not so fortunate in singles, dropping five of seven matches to 12th-ranked Florida and another match to NC State. Melian was the bright spot, however, defeating No. 51 Bob van Overbeek in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Anish Sharma picked up the Yellow Jackets’ second win with a three-set triumph over the Gators’ Luke Johnson, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6.
Tech All-American Juan Spir, ranked 32nd nationally, lost a straight-set match to #26 Florent Diep, and Eduardo Segura fell in straight sets to #118 Gordon Watson.
The Yellow Jackets open their dual match season and open their brand-new facility, the Ken Byers Tennis Complex, with a pair of matches Friday against Old Dominion (1 p.m.) and Lipscomb (7 p.m.).
