Tech Earns First ACC Win at Boston College

Dedham, Mass. – Georgia Tech won its first three singles matches in straight sets following winning the doubles point, polishing off Boston College for its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at the Dedham Health and Athletic Complex.

Tech improved to 8-10 overall and 1-4 in ACC play with the win, while the Eagles dropped to 5-8, 0-3.

The Yellow Jackets captured the doubles point despite a loss at the top position. Nathan Rakitt and Juan Melian got past Billy Grokenberger and Matt Wagner, 8-6, on court 2, and after Juan Spir and Eduardo Segura dropped an 8-6 decision to Phillip Nelson and Michael McGinnis, Garrett Gordon and Colin Edwards defeated Kyle Childree and Alexandre Thirouin by the same score.

Tech moved quickly to win the match in singles play. Rakitt, a freshman from Marietta, Ga., defeated Jonathan Raude, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3, his 20th singles victory of the year, before the BC picked up its only point, a 6-2, 6-1 win for Childree over Gordon on court 5. Segura downed Grokenberger, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4, and Spir took a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 2 over McGinnis for the clinching point.

Melian went on to defeat Nelson, 6-3. 3-6, 6-2, at the top position for his 20th win this year, and Edwards outlasted Wagner, 6-4, 7-6 (14-12).

Tech returns to action Friday, April 5, against North Carolina at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
