BISHOP, Ga. – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2012 season with second-place finishes at the UGA Invite at the UGA Equestrian Farm in Bishop, Ga. Jeremy Greenwald led the way for the men, while Katie Townsend finished first for the Tech women.
Heading into the season-opening meet, the Tech men’s squad was ranked eighth in the South Region. The host Bulldogs, ranked No. 28 in the country, swept both the men’s and women’s competition.
The Bulldogs swept first through fifth place in the 8K men’s race with 15 points and an average time of 26:27.85. Tech tallied 53 points and averaged 27:08.61.
Greenwald finished sixth of 67 runners in his first cross country meet at Tech in a team-leading time of 26:49.58. He was followed by Obiandu Igwe (ninth, 26:59.12), Shawn Roberts (12th, 27:07.64) and Alex Clifford (16th, 27:17.92) to round out Tech’s top finishers.
In the women’s 5K, the Bulldogs took first through third place with 20 points and an average time of 17:19.69. Tech collected 56 points and averaged a time of 17:56.86.
The Yellow Jacket women were led by Katie Townsend who finished sixth of 63 runners with a career-best time of 17:30.80. She was followed by Mary Kate DuBard (seventh, 17:36.88), Katie Vance (13th, 17:56.15) Caroline Kissel (18th, 18:06.88) and Rachel Hammond (24th, 18:33.59) to round out Tech’s top finishers.
Tech returns to action on Friday, Sept. 14 at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. Race time is set for 6 p.m.
