Tech And No. 15 Georgia Collide In Midweek Matchup

THE FLATS – After a weekend off from competition, the Georgia Tech softball team (19-11, 8-8 ACC) is back in action Wednesday at 6 p.m. in a midweek matchup against the No. 15/17 Georgia Bulldogs (30-5, 6-3 SEC) in Athens, Ga. at Jack Turner Stadium.

The Jackets have gone 5-5 in their last 10 games and are looking to get their first win in Athens since sweeping a doubleheader on March 28, 2007.

Two freshmen lead Georgia Tech in batting average – Kanani Cabrales (.411) and Samantha Pierannunzi (.385). Seniors Ashley Thomas (.376), Hayley Downs (.366) and Alysha Rudnik (.333) are hitting above .300 and account for almost have of Tech’s runs scored (66).

As a team, Georgia Tech ranks 19th in the country and first in the ACC in stolen bases per game (1.77). Individually, the Jackets rank in the top 50 in six categories. Downs is seventh in the nation and first in the ACC in sacrifice hits per game (0.37), and she 26th nationally and leads the conference in stolen bases per game (0.60).

Ashley Thomas, who was recently drafted by the Akron Racers in the NPF, is 26th nationally in runs per game (1.07). Chelsie Thomas is No. 25 as the toughest to strike with a strikeout coming every 30.5 at bats, Maddie Lionberger is No. 29 with three triples, and pitcher Kylie Kleinschmidt is No. 43 with 121 strikeouts.

Series History
Wednesday’s matchup marks the first of two meetings scheduled this season for the two teams. Georgia captured both games last season. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series against the Yellow Jackets 22-10.

Up Next For Tech
Georgia Tech resumes conference action this weekend with a three-game series at home against Virginia Tech. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. at Mewborn Field. Sunday’s series finale is scheduled for 12 p.m. as the Jackets recognize their former players on Alumni Day.
