Strafaci, Norton Advance at U.S. Amateur

Pacific Palisades, Calif. – Georgia Tech sophomore Tyler Strafaci and incoming freshman Noah Norton won their opening-round matches, while sophomore Andy Ogletree was eliminated Wednesday at the 117th U.S. Amateur Championship at Riviera Country Club.

Strafaci (Davie, Fla.), who tied for 35th in stroke play, downed Matthew Wolff of Agoura Hills, Calif., the 26th seed, 3 and 2. The Yellow Jacket sophomore went back and forth with the Oklahoma State freshman-to-be on the front nine, edged ahead with a birdie at No. 10, then won the 14th and 15th holes to pull away.

Norton (Chico, Calif.), the 45th seed, was all square through 13 holes with Turk Pettit of Sugar Grove, N.C., the 20th seed and , were all square through 13 holes, but the Tech freshman-to-be won the 14th and 15th holes with pars, then halved 16 and 17 to close out the match against the Clemson enrollee.

Ogletree (Little Rock, Miss.) lost his round of 64 match to Dawson Armstrong of Brentwood, Tenn., a senior at Lipscomb University, 3 and 1.

The rounds of 32 and 16 are scheduled for Wednesday at Riviera. Norton is set to take on Cole Madey of West Linn, Ore., a junior at UCLA and the No. 52 seed, at 8:05 a.m. Pacific Time Wednesday in the round of 32. Strafaci will face the seventh seed, Virginia Tech senior Mark Lawrence, Jr., of Richmond, Va., at 8:55 a.m.

They are chasing a title won five times by Georgia Tech’s legendary Bobby Jones (1924 1925, 1927, 1928, 1930), and most recently by Matt Kuchar (1997).

FS1 will provide television coverage through Friday, with the Fox network taking over coverage of the semifinals and finals Saturday and Sunday.
