THE FLATS – Nahom Solomon is once again headed out west, this time representing Georgia Tech outdoor track and field in Walnut, California for the Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday night.
Competing in the invitational division of the 10,000-meter race, the senior is scheduled to run at 9:45 p.m. PT/12:45 a.m. ET (Friday). The ultra-elite race will also feature select student-athletes from Middle Tennessee State, Southern Utah, UConn, Gonzaga, Florida State, McNeese State, Georgia, UCLA, Texas and Washington State.
Solomon is looking to extend his record-breaking year in which he’s already etched his name in the Georgia Tech record books for the indoor 3000m and both 5000m events. The Snellville, Ga. native broke the two-year-old record in the 3000m by more than two seconds at the Iowa State Classic before becoming the first Yellow Jacket to run the 5K in under 14 minutes, breaking the 15-year-old indoor record.
Then in his first trip to the West Coast of this outdoor season, Solomon broke the 46-year-old 5000m record, running a 13:51.92.
The current 10K record for Georgia Tech is held by D.J. McMillan. McMillan ran a 29:22.45 time at the Stanford Invitational in 2012, breaking the then-17-year-old record that was held by Kevin Graham (1995).
