MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior Jessica Sinclair went 2-for-3 with a triple, home run and three RBI as the Georgia Tech softball team (23-5) defeated Providence (7-15), 6-4, Sunday morning in the final game of the Chanticleer Challenge. Freshman Lindsey Anderson (4-0) had a career-high 12 strikeouts in the complete-game win but had to hang on at the end as the Friars scored four runs in the seventh inning and had the tying run at the plate.
The Yellow Jackets struck for two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Kristine Priebe led off with a single and then scored two batters later when junior Jessica Sinclair ripped a triple to the gap in left-center field. Freshman pinch runner Hayley Downs scored the second run of the inning on a sac fly off the bat of senior Jessica Weaver.
Georgia Tech added two runs in the bottom of the third inning to make it a 4-0 game. With runners at first and third and one out, senior Christy Jones scored on a wild pitch by PC pitcher Alicia Grosso. Later in the inning, junior Kelsi Weseman added a RBI single.
After giving up a leadoff double and a two-out walk in the first inning, Anderson retired 15 straight batters until Michelle Huber singled through the right side with two outs in the top of the sixth. Anderson walked the next two batters but came back to strike out Morgan Culver for the third time and get out of the inning.
Sinclair made it 6-0 Yellow Jackets with a two-run home run, her sixth of the year, to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Mackenzie Morgan led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to break up Anderson’s shut out. Later in the inning, Huber hit a three-run home run making it a 6-4 game and then Justine Stratton singled but Anderson got Jessie Bryant to fly out and end the game.
Georgia Tech’s spring break trip concludes on Tuesday, March 22 with a doubleheader at Winthrop. Game one will begin at 5 p.m.
