Rudman Cruises on Day One of Qualifying at Riviera/ITA All-American Championships

Oct. 4, 2005

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Tarryn Rudman, a junior from Johannesburg South Africa, continued her strong run at the 2005 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, as she recorded straight-set victories in the first two rounds of the Qualifying Tournament Tuesday at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Rudman, ranked No. 103 in the nation in singles play, defeated Minnesota’s 86th-ranked Nischela Reddy in the first round by a 6-2, 6-4 score and then downed Southern Cal’s Luana Magnani, ranked 74th in the nation, by the same 6-2, 6-4 mark to set up a Round of 16 matchup with Florida’s Diana Srebovic, the No. 5 seed in the Qualifier and the nation’s No. 34 singles player. Rudman’s match against Srebovic will begin in the early afternoon (EST) on Wednesday, with the winner advancing to the main draw of 2005 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships.

The Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships is the first of three national collegiate tennis championships this season, and the fall’s premier hard court event features the top players in NCAA Division I tennis. The Oct. 6-9 main draw of the tournament is preceded by two sets of qualifying tournaments. The 64-player, 32-doubles team prequalifying tournament was this past weekend at UCLA, with four players and doubles teams advancing to this week’s (Oct. 4-5) 64-player qualifying tournament at Riviera, where eight players and four doubles teams will advance to the main draw.

In other singles action, Kelly Anderson, a recipient of a bye to the Qualifying Round, fell in her first round match to Christian Thompson of Notre Dame by a score of 4-6, 2-6, and then dropped her first set in her consolation match vs. Vlatka Jovanovic of Arkansas, 4-6, but then came back with 6-2, 6-0 scores in the next two sets against the Lady Razorback to move to the Round of 16 in the consolations, which will be played at noon (EST) Wednesday.

Complete results for the tournament can be found at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s website, www.itatennis.com and updated draws will be posted throughout the day at www.edraws.com/ita while results for all Georgia Tech competitors will be posted at www.ramblinwreck.com at the end of each day’s competition.
