THE FLATS – A Miles Kelly three-pointer with 2:43 left in the game gave Georgia Tech its first lead of the second half, capping a furious comeback from a 14-point deficit, and the Yellow Jackets held hot-shooting Howard scoreless for more than five minutes to help Tech get past the Bison, 88-85, on Thursday night at McCamish Pavilion.
Kelly scored 16 of his game high 27 points during the rally, which saw Tech come back from a 57-43 deficit with three minutes into the second half. His three-pointer and a jumper that followed gave the Jackets an 80-76 lead with two minutes on the clock, and the junior guard made four free throws in the final 15 seconds to seal the victory.
The Yellow Jackets (2-0) held advantages in points off turnovers (15-6), second-chance points (16-11) and points in the paint (50-46), but were unable to cool the Bisons (1-1) offense. Howard shot better than 50 percent for the game (50.8), while Tech shot 42.9 percent.
