Payne and Wood Named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

Danny Payne and Sarah Wood were named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, March 20, 2006.

Payne, a sophomore from Woodstock, Ga., hit .389 with two home runs, six RBI, and seven runs scored in four games last week. He also made two pitching appearances and worked 2.2 scoreless innings. In Sunday’s 17-11 win over No. 19 North Carolina State, Payne hit a home run and then pitched the final 1.2 innings to record his first career save.

Wood, a junior from Marietta, Ga., led the Georgia Tech softball team to a three-game sweep over Maryland this past weekend at Glenn Field. Wood retired 15 straight batters in the nightcap on Saturday, throwing five scoreless innings and striking out five. On Sunday, Wood did not allow an earned run in four innings of work, surrendering one hit and fanning two. She ended the weekend 2-0 with seven strikeouts, no walks and allowing four hits in 9.0 innings pitched.
