Notre Dame Escapes Georgia Tech, 13-12

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Georgia Tech softball (25-10, 6-8 ACC) lost an extra inning affair against No. 25 Notre Dame (26-7, 6-3 ACC) on Saturday at Melissa Cook Stadium. The Yellow Jackets scored seven runs in the fourth inning, tied for third most in a single inning this season.

Junior catcher Emma Kauf was a triple short of the cycle after going 3-for-5 on the day. Freshman outfielder Auburn Dupree reached base safely three times, scoring every time.

The game started off on the right note for the Jackets when Kauf rocketed a ball into the shrubbery over the center field wall, giving Tech a 1-0 lead. Notre Dame answered quickly with a three-run bottom half of the first.

After both teams scored in the third, Georgia Tech came out with fiery bats in the top of the fourth inning scoring seven runs. The massive inning was started by freshman Grace Connelly in pinch hit duties. She came off the bench to double in a run. A double would conclude the scoring for the Yellow Jackets when senior second baseman Bailee Zeitler got a ball down the left field line to drive in two more runs.

Tech didn’t slow down in the fifth, scoring two more runs to jump out to an 11-5 lead. Notre Dame would fight back with three runs in the sixth and seventh to send the game into extras.

The eighth inning would remain scoreless before senior outfielder Kennedy Cowden would hit a wall scraper home run to put the Jackets on top 12-11. Notre Dame answered with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory.

Game Notes

  • The seven-run fourth inning is tied for third most this season.
  • Cowden’s home run was the first of the season for her.
  • Kauf’s seven total bases are a season high.
