No. 7 Yellow Jackets Fall to No. 2 California, 5-2

MADISON, Wis. – The Yellow Jackets 11-match winning streak at Nielsen Tennis Stadium has come to an end as the No. 7 Georgia Tech women’s team (4-1) dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 2 California (5-0) Saturday in the quarterfinals of the 2009 ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

The Jackets lost the doubles point for the second straight day as the Golden Bears swept all three matches. In the top flight, Cal’s No. 7 tandem of Marina Cossou and Clair IIcinkas held off the Yellow Jackets fifth-ranked Amanda McDowell and Irina Falconi, 8-6.

California moved ahead 2-0 behind No. 30 IIcinkas’ 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 57 Noelle Hickey from the No. 4 spot in the lineup. In the second flight, No. 52 Jana Juricova then defeated No. 23 Falconi, 6-3, 7-5, to give the Golden Bears a commanding 3-0 lead.

Yellow Jacket freshman Viet Ha Ngo cut into Cal’s lead with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Marion Ravelojaona in the No. 6 singles position. No. 11 McDowell continued the Yellow Jacket comeback with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the top spot in the lineup over No. 13 Cossou.

The Golden Bears would then clinch the match when Mari Anderson defeated No. 27 Striplin, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 3 flight.

The Yellow Jackets will continue action Sunday in the consolation quarterfinals round against No. 3 UCLA at 4:30 p.m. ET.
