No. 6 Tech Women Down No. 69 Virginia, 4-1, in Charlottesville

Charlottesville, Va. – Rookie Kristi Miller and sophomore Alison Silverio earned singles and doubles victories Saturday afternoon to lead No. 6 Georgia Tech (12-2, 5-0 ACC) to a 4-1 match win over No. 69 Virginia (5-9, 1-3 ACC) at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville.

The Yellow Jackets began singles play with a 1-0 lead after earning victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles positions to earn the doubles point. Miller and Dasha Potapova teamed together in the No. 2 slot to drop the Cavaliers’ Kristen James and Dora Bechliwanis, 8-1, while Tech’s No. 3 doubles duo of Whitney McCray and Silverio defeated Lindsey Pereira and Caroline Hammond, 8-3, giving the Jackets the doubles point.

Both Miller and Silverio recorded their 23rd doubles victories in 2005, which ties them with Bobbi Guthrie and Jamie Wong for most doubles wins in a single season.

Virginia tied the match at 1-1 when Douglas Wink stopped Tech’s Kelly Anderson, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles before the Yellow Jackets went up 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win by Silverio at the No. 3 singles slot.

Miller, ranked 15th in the nation, gave Georgia Tech a 3-1 edge in the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kristen James at No. 1 singles. With 34 singles victories in 2005, Miller ranks first for most singles wins in a season at Georgia Tech.

Lyndsay Shosho, playing in the No. 4 singles slot, easily defeated Bechliwanis, 6-1, 6-0, to capture the match victory for Georgia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets hit the road for College Park, where they will play the Maryland Terrapins Sunday at 11 a.m. before returning home to round out the dual-match season.
