TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 6 Florida State Seminoles defeated the Georgia Tech softball team, 3-0, in the series finale at JoAnne Graf Field to wrap up both teams’ 2014 regular seasons. The Yellow Jackets finish the regular season with a 23-23 overall record and 11-17 in ACC play, while the Seminoles improved to 47-6 on the season and 24-3 in ACC play.
“I thought Karly Fullem did a great job in the circle for us, especially when called upon,” head coach Shelly Hoerner said. “We got runners on, we just didn’t execute and finish the game, and that’s what we need to do. I’m proud of the way our team played against Florida State all weekend.”
The hits were even in the contest as both teams tallied three each, but the Seminoles’ timely at bats helped Florida State to victory.
Florida State wasted little time and jumped out to a 2-0 in the first inning. The Jackets and Seminoles battled back and forth for the next four and half innings until the bottom of the fifth inning.
A leadoff home run by Victoria East sparked the Florida State bats and the Seminoles loaded the bases again with two outs and a 3-0 lead. Georgia Tech starter Karly Fullem induced a fly out to Hayley Downs in centerfield to get out of the jam.
Karly Fullem (0-1) suffered the loss, pitching all six innings and allowing three runs on three hits. Florida State’s Lacey Waldrop (31-4) entered the game in relief in the third inning and pitched 2.2 innings with one hit for the win. Jessica Burroughs earned her first save of the season, throwing the last 1.0 inning to finalize the win.
The Jackets are back in action at the 2014 ACC Tournament and are slated to be the No. 8 seed.. The tournament is scheduled for May 8-10 in College Park, Md.
