Feb. 29, 2004

ATLANTA-Kelly Anderson won the deciding match as the No. 44 Georgia Tech women’s tennis team improved to 5-2 on the year with a win out west against No. 34 San Diego State University at the SDSU Courts.

Kelly Anderson was the deciding factor for the Yellow Jackets as she took her match in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Anderson gave the Jackets the fourth and deciding point of the afternoon securing the overall match for Tech.

Georgia Tech started off the day by losing the doubles point. After Lindsey Stauss and Alison Silverio took the match at No. 3 doubles, the Aztecs rallied to win at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. SDSU’s Indra Erichsen and Katalina Romero, ranked 13th nationally, edged Georgia Tech’s Kelly Anderson and Sekita Grant, 9-8 (5), and Aztecs Alesya Vidov and Dita Hauerlandova defeated Lyndsay Shosho and Maria Nieto, 8-6.

The Yellow Jackets, however, would win all six singles matches with three of those going to three sets apiece.

Tech’s Stauss made short work of SDSU’s Vidov in the No. 4 singles slot winning 6-3, 6-2. In the next two matches of the afternoon, Grant and Nieto both won in straight sets for the Yellow Jackets setting up Anderson for the deciding match.

Shosho and Silverio both won in three sets with to give Tech the 6-1 victory.

“The girls played very well today,” head coach Bryan Shelton exclaimed. “They were much improved in doubles play than they have been the past couple of matches. I was very pleased with the team effort they put forth today. This was a big positive especially preparing to go into a match with Pepperdine this week. We hope that we can come home with a victory.”

The Yellow Jackets return to action as they travel to Pepperdine March 2, for a match set to start at 1:30 p.m.
