No. 31 Jackets Fall at No. 1 Georgia, 4-0

ATHENS, Ga. – No. 31 Georgia Tech dropped a hard-fought decision at No. 1 Georgia Saturday afternoon, falling 4-0 to the Bulldogs. The Jackets wrapped up non-conference play 3-4.

DOUBLES ACTION: Forced to move inside due to weather, the doubles point came down to the wire in tough competition. It was anybody’s point with the first two courts tied at 5-all and court three in a match tiebreaker. Tech’s doubles pair of Nami Otsuka and Gia Cohen raced out with a 3-1 lead on court three over Morgan Coppoc/Meg Kowalski, but the Bulldogs tied it at 4-all. Otsuka and Cohen grabbed a 6-5 lead, but Coppoc and Kowalski forced a tiebreaker at 6-6. The Jackets took the match, winning the tiebreaker, 7-2. Tied at 5-all on courts one and two, Georgia captured both victories in gritty battles to take the early 1-0 match lead.

SINGLES ACTION: Georgia clinched the match with a trio of singles wins. No. 28 Vivian Wolff gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead, taking a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Otsuka on court four before No. 14 Marta Gonzalez defeated Jeanette Lin on court two, 6-2, 6-3. The match was clinched on court three where No. 83 Lourdes Carle edged Valeriya Deminova, 6-2, 6-3.

QUOTABLE: “It was a tough match today. Georgia has a great team and outplayed us. We competed hard. We will regroup and be ready for a tough battle tomorrow against Pitt at home.” – Head coach Rodney Harmon

UP NEXT: Georgia Tech faces a quick turnaround, hosting Pitt on Sunday to open ACC play. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
