ATHENS, Ga. – Alisa Goler had two home runs and seven RBI to lead the No. 2/2 Georgia softball team (28-4) to a 10-2 win in five innings over No. 25/24 Georgia Tech (28-6) Wednesday night at Jack Turner Stadium. Junior Kelsi Weseman had a two-run home run to account for the Tech scoring.
Senior Kristen Adkins (14-3) took the loss for Tech as she allowed seven runs on four hits, Only two of the runs were unearned, however, as the Yellow Jackets committed three errors in the first two innings. Adkins walked two and struck out two. Sophomore Hope Rush pitched the final 0.2 innings and was charged for three earned runs on two hits. She walked two and struck out one.
Georgia struck first with an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning. Taylor Schlopy led off the frame by reaching on a two-base error and then scored on a two-out single to center by Brianna Hesson. Adkins got out of a two on with two out jam, however, to keep it just a 1-0 deficit for the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia made it a 6-0 game in the second inning as it capitalized on two Georgia Tech errors. The big blow in the inning was a grand slam off the bat of Alisa Goler.
Tech got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. After junior Kate Kuzma led off with her second single in as many at bats, junior Kelsi Weseman hit a two-run home run to left field making it a 6-2 game. It was her 11th round-tripper of the season.
Georgia came right back in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs all off the bat of Goler. Her second home run of the night, this one a three-run shot, put Georgia on top 9-2. The home run came off sophomore relief pitcher Hope Rush who entered the game in relief of Adkins two batters earlier. UGA added a run later in the inning on a Rush wild pitch for its 10th run of the game.
The Yellow Jackets will head up to College Park, Md., this weekend for a three-game ACC series at Maryland in a battle of the only two remaining undefeated teams in league play. Tech and the Terps will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then close out the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Live audio and stats for every game will be available at RamblinWreck.com.
