Jordan Delass won at No. 3 singles over Antonio Ruiz, 7-6, 6-2, but the No. 23 Georgia Tech men’s tennis team fell by a 6-1 score to No. 1 Georgia in Athens Wednesday. With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 6-4 while the Bulldogs improve to 15-0 on the season.
The Bulldogs started the match by taking the doubles point, winning at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. The duo of No. 55 Luis Flores and Matic Omerzel began with a 8-4 win over Tech’s Delass and George Gvelesiani, 8-4 and soon after the No. 7 team of John Isner and Antonio Ruiz defeated David North and Marko Rajevac, 8-5, at No. 1 to take the point. The Jackets were able to win at No. 2 doubles as Scott Blackmon and Zachary Rath upset No. 9 Colin Purcell and Strahinja Bobusic, 8-6.
Georgia then increased its lead to 2-0 when Rajevac had to retire due to injury at No. 1 to No. 1 Isner, trailling 2-3. The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead as Gvelesiani fell to Purcell at No. 5, 6-2, 6-4. No. 29 Flores clinched the match for Georgia winning 6-4, 6-1 over North at No. 2 singles.
In the final three singles matches on the day, Rath lost at No. 4 singles to No. 49 Omerzel, 6-4, 6-4 while Blackmon dropped a match at No. 6 singles to Ricardo Gonzalez, 6-3, 6-2.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Monday when they travel to face No. 19 Texas A&M in College Station, Texas at 3 p.m.
