TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Brad Mixson notched a three-set singles victory to complete a Seminole comeback as No. 16 Florida State (8-1, 1-0 ACC) defeated Georgia Tech (8-2, 0-1 ACC), 5-2, Friday night at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
After Georgia Tech swept doubles and David North posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Clint Bowles at No. 2 singles, the Seminoles began their comeback. Sam Chang closed the margin to one by stopping Eliot Potvin, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles, and Maciek Sykut tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ryan Smith at the No. 5 spot.
Jean-Yves Aubone then gave Florida State its first lead of the match with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Tech freshman Guillermo Gomez at the top of the lineup before Mixson completed the comeback with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win over Miguel Muguruza at the bottom of the singles lineup.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead in the match when North and Gomez downed the Seminole duo of Mixson and Andrew Bailey, 8-1, at the No. 2 doubles spot. The remaining two doubles matches went to tiebreakers, with Tech coming out on top in both. Blackmon and Smith teamed together atop the lineup to stop Bowles and Aubone while Muguruza and Potvin downed Chang and Sykut at the No. 3 spot.
Chris Cloer finished off the match by stopping Tech’s Scott Blackmon, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, for the final three-point margin.
