No. 10 Yellow Jackets Host Georgia Tech Classic

THE FLATS No. 10 Georgia Tech volleyball (7-0) will make its home debut this weekend by hosting the Georgia Tech Classic, beginning with Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate against Georgia on Friday at 7 p.m. in McCamish Pavilion, presented by Delta. The White and Gold will also host Howard on Saturday at 4 p.m. and San Diego on Sunday at 1 p.m., both in O’Keefe Gymnasium.

Each of the Yellow Jackets’ matches over the weekend can be streamed with a paid subscription to ACC Network Extra.

Parking

On Friday, parking will be available in the East O’Keefe, Family Housing and Peters parking lots. On Saturday and Sunday, parking will be available in the McCamish, East O’Keefe and Family Housing lots.

Promotions

This weekend is filled with promotions, highlighted by Friday’s action in McCamish. The action will be accompanied by a Yellow Jacket Club tailgate from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., a Fall Girls and Women in Sports Day autograph and meet and greet session from 6 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. and several giveaways, including Delta “Point Tech” t-shirts, THWg rally towels, white poms and 200 “Point Tech” t-shirts for students.

Single-match tickets for all regular season matches in O’Keefe Gymnasium have sold out. Storylines

  • The Jackets were ranked No. 10 in the AVCA DI Coaches Poll.
  • The No. 10 mark ties the seventh highest ranking in program history as this year’s unit joins the squads from 2003, 2021 and 2022 as the only teams to enter the top 10.
  • Georgia Tech made the highest leap of teams in the preseason poll to week one as they rose nine spots from their previous ranks of No. 20 to No. 11.
  • The White and Gold have been listed in 58 straight top 25 polls dating back to 2020, reaching as high as No. 5 during that time, the highest for the program since 2003 and second-best mark all time.
  • Tech’s 7-0 start ties the fourth-hottest streak to open a season in program history.
  • Prior to sweeping the Florida A&M Invitational, Tech followed its third-highest ranked victory in program history over then No. 8 Penn State with a pair of 3-1 wins over previous No. 12 Ohio State.
  • The three-consecutive top-15 triumphs marked the first such streak in school history.
  • Freshman right side hitter Larissa Mendes won her second consecutive ACC Co-Freshman of the week award following the weekend. Tech owns three total ACC weekly awards as senior libero Paola Pimentel was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week a week ago.
  • Pimentel has been all over the floor, leading the conference and placing 13th in the country in digs per set (5.21).
  • Junior outside hitter Bianca Bertolino has been a weapon from the service line, ranking second in the league and 24th in the nation in aces per set (0.62).
  • Also owning top-three marks amongst the ACC for the Jackets are senior setter Bella D’Amico with 10.21 assists per set along with freshman outside hitter Larissa Mendes with 3.79 kills per set.
  • The Yellow Jackets enter the fourth week of the season amongst the top three in the ACC and top 15 in the NCAA in four major categories – second in the league and sixth in the nation in assists per set (13.50), leading the conference and eighth in the country in digs per set (17.54), second in the ACC and fourth in the NCAA in kills per set (14.75) and third in the league and 13th in the nation in opponent hitting percentage (.131).
  • Going beyond 2019’s NIVC title, Tech has won 86 of its last 106 matches.
  • Coach Michelle Collier has begun her 10th season leading the Jackets as the second winningest coach in program history, including 180 victories and 98 in conference play.

Series Notes

  • Georgia leads Tech in the all-time series, 24-19. The Yellow Jackets swept the Bulldogs in the last two contests at home and on the road. Since 1999, Georgia Tech is 19-4 in Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate matchups, including a pair of seven-match win streaks between 1999-2004 and 2006-12.
  • Georgia Tech and Howard will square off for the first time on Saturday.
  • San Diego claimed the only meeting with the White and Gold on its home floor in 2017.
