Nine Jackets Named To All-ACC Academic Team

April 24, 2013

THE FLATS – Nine members of the Georgia Tech swimming & diving team have been named to the 2012-13 All-ACC Academic Team, it was announced recently by Commissioner John Swofford. Senior diver Brandon Makinson headlined the list for the Yellow Jackets as a four-time selection.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.

For the men, Makinson was joined by two-time honorees sophomore Andrew Kosic, senior Eric Chiu, sophomore Nico van Duijn and senior Zach Tillman. Sophomore Andrew Chetcuti earned his first career mention. On the women’s side, senior Kate Riley was named, along with freshmen Erika Staskevicius and Shannon Lumbra.

“I’m extremely proud of these men and women,” said head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “Georgia Tech is without question a strong academic institution and we as a team put an emphasis on academics in our program.”

Makinson, an aerospace engineering major from Calgary, Alberta, was one of just five men’s swimmers from the ACC this year to be four-time honorees. The others included Florida State’s Nicholas Klein, NC State’s Brandon Kingston, and Virginia Tech’s Greg Mahon and Logan Shinholser.
