TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team dropped its opening match at the Alabama Four-in-the-Fall event to South Carolina, 5-1, on Friday afternoon.
Owen DeMuth and Jonathan Irwanto opened the match with a doubles battle on Line 2. Their match with South Carolina’s William Moxon and Cole Henceroth went the distance as they forced a tiebreaker after a 6-6 scoreline. The Gamecocks duo won the tiebreaker 7-4 to sweep doubles after their 6-3 win on Line 1.
Lucas Yunez led the charge on Line 1 for the Yellow Jackets and secured a crucial first-set tiebreaker at 7-4 over Gabe Avram that allowed him to coast through the second frame 6-1. This marked Yunez’s second win over an opponent with a sub-7 WTN rating this fall.
Fellow freshman Mason Taube also secured his first set on Line 2 after a 6-4 result over Atakan Karahan. Karahan found his footing and won the remaining sets, 6-2, 6-1, to complete the victory. South Carolina won the remaining matches on Lines 3 and 4 in straight sets.
