THE FLATS - The Georgia Tech men’s tennis saw two doubles teams advance to the third round of ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Friday.
Tech featured three doubles pairings for the second round of play with Jonathan Irwanto and Owen DeMuth, Gianluca Carlini and Mason Taube, along with Richard Biagiotti and Elias Shokry.
Carlini and Taube worked their way through a battle with Florida Atlantic’s Simon Myslivec and Roman Venger but pulled out the stops to win 8-5 in the match and power onto the next round.
Biagiotti and Shokry faced a strong Miami duo of Jakub Kroslak and Salvador Price and found momentum early to secure the victory at 8-4. South Florida’s duo of Ashton McLeod and Guglielmo Verdese won their match 8-3 over Irwanto and DeMuth.
Freshman Lucas Yunez and junior Carlini remained as the two Yellow Jackets in the singles main draw. Yunez was tasked with Florida State’s Elias Sumann and worked his way through his match with precision, dealing a 6-3, 6-4 result over the junior to advance to the third round.
Carlini faced FAU’s Venger for the second time on the day after their doubles matchup. Venger found points in the crucial moments to win the match at 6-4, 6-4. Georgia junior Andrew Delgado won his third round battle over Yunez 6-1, 6-2.
Yunez won four consecutive singles matches during his run in the championships, winning eight of nine sets and was spotless in the main draw prior to his third round exit.
Saturday morning will see Carlini and Taube face FGCU’s Hugo Magnusson and Stefan Correa at 10AM before Biagiotti and Shokry follow the first slate of doubles matches against Florido duo Andreas Timini and Kevin Edengren.
