Jackets Send Five Entries to Second Round

Tech secured three of four doubles matches with two singles wins in the first round

THE FLATS - The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team secured five entries into the second round of the ITA Southeast Regionals Championships on Thursday. Gianluca Carlini and Lucas Yunez advanced as singles entries with three doubles teams advancing to the second round.

The doubles championship began in the morning and the Yellow Jackets were flying across the courts. Senior duo Jonathan Irwanto and Owen DeMuth handled their business with a 8-5 win on Court 3 over a Stetson pairing.

Tech notched two doubles victories over Georgia Southern as Carlini and Mason Taube took a 8-4 win with Richard Baigiotti and Elias Shokry delivering a 8-3 victory. The underclassmen pairing of Hidde Schoenmakers and Yunez dropped the match tiebreaker 8-7 (3). The Jackets secured three spots in the second round of the main draw.

Carlini found himself in a battle on Court 1, winning the first-set tiebreaker 7-2 before Kennesaw State’s Dominic Ducariu responded with a 7-5 second frame. The two traded games back-and-forth before Carlini pulled a break out to win the match at 6-4. The junior became the first Tech player to punch his ticket to the second round.

Yunez followed up his two qualifying wins from yesterday with a convincing 6-3, 6-4 straight-sets win in the first round. The remaining four matches in the round were losses for Tech as Biagiotti and Shokry dropped three-set battles with Taube and Irwanto losing in straight sets.

Shokry competed in a mammoth consolation match featuring 36 complete games, winning the first set 6-4 before requiring a 7-5 third-set tiebreaker to notch the victory.

Friday will feature the second round of doubles play before the singles matches ensue. The second and third rounds of singles play will follow throughout the afternoon and evening.
