THE FLATS - Freshmen Mason Taube and Lucas Yunez secured their spots in the ITA Regionals Singles Main Draw after each notched two qualifying wins on Wednesday in their collegiate home debuts.
The championships opened with a full day of qualifying on the singles side as Owen DeMuth, Taube, and Yunez were set to compete in their first ITA event of the season. Both freshmen, Taube and Yunez, made immediate impacts in the first round, securing straight-set victories and winning 12 of 15 games played. This marked their first competitive victories for the Yellow Jackets at home.
DeMuth battled in his opener, pulling out a 7-3 first-set tiebreaker before Kennesaw State’s Xavier Ferrer worked his back to win the remaining two sets 6-3, 6-2. DeMuth came out on the winning side of his consolation match after another hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory to close out his singles run.
Taube was on fire moving into his second match, sweeping the first set 6-0 before finding himself in a tightly contested second frame. Facing an early deficit, he worked his way back before winning the final two games to win 7-5 on Court 2.
Over on Court 1, Miami’s Felix Felsmann won the opening set 6-4 before Yunez found his footing and charged back. He recorded back-to-back 6-2 set performances to complete the comeback and punched his ticket into the main draw.
Thursday will open the first two rounds of the doubles main draw starting at 8:30 a.m. before the first round of singles main draw action in the afternoon. Tech will feature four doubles teams and six singles players across the day. For draws and results information, visit ramblinwreck.com.
