THE FLATS – After helping Georgia Tech’s defense hold one of the nation’s top rushing attacks to its lowest output of the season in the Yellow Jackets’ 28-25 win over No. 23 Duke, Tech freshman linebacker Braylon Outlaw (Montgomery, Ala./Pike Road H.S.) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Rookie of the Week.

Outlaw earned the award on the strength of being a part of a defensive effort that limited Duke’s 12th-ranked rushing offense to just 159 yards, the Blue Devils’ lowest rushing total of the season and nearly 85 yards below its 243.5-yard average going into the game. Outlaw and the Jackets’ defense also held Duke’s Nate Sheppard, the nation’s leading rusher going into the game at 161 yards per contest, to just 99 yards on 27 carries, good for a 3.7 yards per rush that was barely half of his 7.1-yard season average going in.
Outlaw finished with four tackles (three solo) in the victory, which upped Georgia Tech to 8-1 against nationally ranked ACC opponents under head coach Brent Key. The win also snapped an eight-game winning streak for defending ACC champion Duke.
Outlaw and the Yellow Jackets (2-3, 1-1 ACC) return to action on Saturday at Virginia Tech (4-2, 1-2 ACC). Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on ACC Network.
