Set 1 (GT 25 – UVA 19)
The opening set saw Tech quickly establish a five-point lead and force Virginia to use a timeout early. Coming out of the Cavaliers’ conference time, the Yellow Jackets outscored Virginia, 6-4, to hold a seven-point lead heading into the media timeout. Despite the Cavaliers continuing to add points to their total, Tech maintained its offensive edge and pushed on for a 25-19 set one win. Bennour began the day with five kills, two aces and one dig. Bianca Garibaldi posted a .500 hitting percentage after recording three kills on four swings. Zoe Humphrey, Laura Bieleski and Magda Kobaidze each tallied two kills as well. With a .600 assist percentage, Soares recorded 12 of Tech’s 14 set-one assists, with Mana Kaneko responsible for the remaining two. The walls of Garibaldi, Bennour, Humphrey and Kobaidze helped Tech defensively with two total blocks, while Kobaidze led the group with four digs.
Set 2 (GT 25 – UVA 19)
Set two began with Tech on its heels as the Yellow Jackets trailed, 15-12, heading into the media timeout. The Jackets used the break to regroup and went on to claim an 18-17 lead, forcing Virginia to burn one of its timeouts. Tech maintained the lead through the remainder of the set, allowing the Cavaliers just two more points to ultimately secure a 25-19 set-two win. Bennour could not be contained by the Cavaliers’ defense, posting a .667 hitting percentage in the second set with six kills on nine attacks and no errors. Soares had a strong showing as well in the second frame, adding another 10 assists to her match total along with two aces.
Set 3 (GT 25 – UVA 16)
Despite the Cavaliers seeing more blocks in the final set (4-3), Tech recorded 17 kills with a .361 hitting percentage in the third set, outperforming Virginia’s eight kills and .118 hitting percentage. Tech found itself trailing to begin the third set, but battled back from a four-point deficit to take an 11-9 lead before Virginia called timeout. Despite the teams trading points and the Cavaliers tying the set three times, the Jackets held their 15-13 lead heading into the media timeout. Tech quickly stacked the final 10 points it needed while surrendering just three more to Virginia, one of which came on a service error. Of those final 10 points, Bennour was responsible for half, recording five kills following the media timeout. The freshman saw her best set of the day in the final frame, recording 10 kills with a .588 hitting percentage. Kobaidze contributed three of Tech’s 17 kills in the third set with a .333 hitting percentage while also recording seven digs. Soares tallied 13 of Tech’s final 16 assists and also had a hand in two of the Jackets’ three final blocks.
