THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech swimming and diving teams hosted its annual white versus gold intrasquad meet with the white team edging out a 351-315 victory on Friday afternoon.
The day began with a new intrasquad record in the 200 medley relay. Freshman James Sorensen swam the opening 50 back split at 22.67 before Tobin Uhl delivered a 25.31 breaststroke split. Junior transfer Leo Verschooten swam the 50 fly leg at 20.86 before Stephen Jones closed out the race with a 20.45 free split.
The squad clocked in at 1:29.29, five hundredths of a second ahead of the event record set back in 2021. Verschooten continued his prolific debut for Tech as he secured the fastest 50 free time at 20.46, five hundredths of a second faster than Andrew Kosic’s mark set in 2014.
Verschooten’s record-breaking efforts scored additional points for the white team, building on its lead set from sweeping all four relay races. The white team was strong in the freestyle races, winning six of eight events and claiming three of four butterfly races. The gold team found success in the backstroke and breaststroke races, winning seven of the eight events.
The white team earned 17 event wins with the gold team securing 13 race victories. The gold team pulled out a tight 473.5-457.05 victory in the opening diving portion. Eight different swimmers recorded multiple race wins, freshman Meriç Uygun leading the way with race victories in the 200 IM, 100 back, and 200 breast.
Georgia Tech will participate in the Atlanta Open Water Swim on Saturday morning as part of the Swim Across America charity series at Lake Lanier Olympic Park. The Jackets will return home on Saturday, September 26, in its dual-meet opener against Emory at 11 a.m.
