Watts’ No-Hitter Lifts Tech to 9-0 Five-Inning Win Over West Georgia

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (18-17, 5-7 ACC) started the week with a 9-0, five-inning win over West Georgia (11-22, 3-3 ASUN), highlighted by its first no-hitter since 2021, thrown by Sydnie Watts.

QUICK HITS

• Watts made her eighth start of the season, 13^th appearance of the season, on Tuesday and faced 15 batters in her 5.0 innings pitched.
• The sophomore was only one walk shy of a perfect game as she surrendered no runs and no hits to West Georgia.
• Her Tuesday no-hitter was the first since Blake Neleman’s 2021 ACC Championship First Round performance where she collected nine strikeouts across 7.0 innings for the 6-0 win over Syracuse.
• Watts’ five-inning no hitter is the first no-hitter in five innings since 2015 when Christina Biggerstaff and Kylie Kleinschmidt were able to down Mount St. Mary’s 12-2. It is also the first solo no-hitter with a run rule victory since Hope Rush’s 8-0 win over North Carolina during the 2010 season.
• Seven Yellow Jackets recorded at least one run in Tuesday’s contest with NFCA Top Performer Addison Leschber leading the group with two runs scored. Leschber’s pair of runs were accompanied by two hits and two RBI.
• The senior now sits with two multi-run games, four multi-hit games, and eight multi-RBI games this season.
• Alyssa Willer and Jayden Gailey also saw a multi-RBI night against West Georgia, bringing Willer to a team high 10 multi-RBI games and Gailey to six multi-RBI games this season.
• Alongside Leschber, Gracyn Tucker, Reese Hunter, and Paige Vukadinovich all recorded two hits apiece. Hunter is now tied with Willer for the most multi-hit games this season (12 games) while Tucker now has 10 and Vukadinovich has five.
• Tucker saw her eighth home run of the season leave Mewborn during the fourth inning of Tuesday’s game. She sits second on the team for home runs this season behind Leschber who has nine after recording four against Duke last weekend.
• Watts joined four other Yellow Jackets who have pitched at least one complete game this season and now also has one shutout on the season. Both the complete game and the shutout are Watts’ second of her career.
• Tech has recorded a home run in 23 of its 35 total games so far this season. Of those 23 games, the Yellow Jackets have recorded multiple home runs in 14 games.
• The five-inning win was Tech’s eighth run-rule victory of the season while the Tuesday night no-no gave the Yellow Jackets their seventh shutout of the season.
• While sporting the fan-favorite peach uniforms, Tech is 2-0 through a combined 11 innings with a total 19 runs scored and only two runs surrendered. Both victories against Kennesaw State and West Georgia were achieved in less than seven innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Watts saw her first strikeout of the game in the first inning as she secured the third out, catching the West Georgia batter looking.
• Tech’s offense got hot early as the Yellow Jackets stacked six runs on eight hits in the bottom of the first. Tech went once through its batting order with Willer, Medina, Leschber, Hunter, and Gailey all recording runs before leadoff hitter Willer returned to bat and hit a sac fly out to right field to send home the final run of the inning.
• After allowing UWG to get on base in the second inning with a walk, Watts went on to immediately get the first out of the third inning, once again looking.
• With Vukadinovich on second and only one out in the bottom of the third, Willer was able to help extend Tech’s lead as she grounded out to first base but gave the senior in scoring position enough time to safely reach home.
• Watts continued to be a problem for West Georgia batters as she caught back-to-back Wolves swinging in the top of the fourth.
• Tech saw its final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth starting with a solo home run over right field from Tucker. Leschber capped the Yellow Jackets’ runs as she came home for the final time off of Hunter’s double to right center.

UP NEXT

The Yellow Jackets are in for one final midweek game Wednesday against Georgia State before heading to Louisville, KY for a three-game series against the Cardinals.
