Tech Comes Up Short With 2-1 Loss in Game One Against No. 14 Virginia

THE FLATS – Despite the late offensive push, Georgia Tech softball (16-12, 4-3 ACC) fell 2-1 on Friday night to No. 14 Virginia (24-2, 3-1 ACC).

QUICK HITS

• Madalyn Johnson made her 13^th start of the season, 18^thappearance, on Friday night and recorded six strikeouts across her 4.0 innings pitched. The six strikeouts for Johnson marked the seventh time this season that Johnson has recorded five or more strikeouts.
• Makayla Coffield made her ninth appearance of the season, seventh relief appearance, as she relieved Johnson in the fifth inning. The lefty recorded two strikeouts against eight batters in her 2.0 innings of work.
• Of Tech’s four Friday hits, Gracyn Tucker led the Yellow Jackets’ offense with three hits. The game one multi-hit performance brings Tucker to eight multi-hit games, the third most for a Yellow Jacket this season behind Alyssa Willer (10) and Reese Hunter (11).
• Tech’s one run in game one was scored by pinch runner, Julia Morici, bringing her to six runs this season.
• Friday’s loss shifted the Yellow Jackets’ overall record to a 56-46 against Virginia, including a 22-14 record on the road. It was the first loss to the Cavaliers in Virginia since March of 2023.
• The last time Tech fell 2-1 to Virginia was back in the 2008 season at Mewborn Field.
• Friday was Tech’s ninth ranked matchup of the season and its fourth within the last week.
• Tech is 10-2 this season when opponents score two or less runs, with both of those loses coming against ranked teams (No. 14 Virginia, 2-1; No. 25 Clemson, 1-0).

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Virginia got on the board early as its runner on second was able to advance home off a single sent through center field.
• The Cavaliers stacked on final run in the bottom of the second as a Tech throwing error provided enough time for the batter on second to safely come home.
• Tech scored its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth after holding UVA scoreless through the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Tucker’s near home run to center field proved too be too much for UVA to handle as she was able to reach third as the outfielder dropped the catch and pinch runner Morici was able to come home.
