THE FLATS – After an hour-and-a-half rain delay, Georgia Tech baseball was unable to complete the sweep against Atlantic Coast Conference rival Clemson, dropping the series finale 14-5 on Sunday afternoon at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (16-8, 5-4 ACC) fell behind early on an unearned run, with four more coming across in the fifth and seven in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Tech was able to score in the fifth on a Stephen Reid RBI single, before plating one in the eighth and two in the ninth by reserves.
At the plate, the Jackets were led by Nicholas Romano, who went 2-for-4 on the day. John Giesler drove in two runs in the ninth, while Jackson Finley mashed a double. Also recording hits on the day was Kristian Campbell and Jett Lovett.
On the mound, Tech used five arms overall. Starter RHP Finley (1-2) received the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of work with six strikeouts. LHP Cody Carwile, LHP Josiah Siegel, LHP Dalton Smith and RHP Demitri Diamant all pitched in relief.
The Tigers (15-10, 2-4 ACC) were led by Caden Grice, who hit two home runs for five RBI on the day. He also received the win as the right-handed starter, going 5.0 innings and surrendering just one run on three hits with six strikeouts.
Georgia Tech heads out for another four-game road swing, beginning on Tuesday, March 28 against Georgia State. The game will be played at Coolray Field, home of the Atlanta Braves’ Triple-A affiliate Gwinnett Stripers, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
Weekend Notes:
- Georgia Tech hit .339 on the weekend, with 14 extra-base hits for 21 RBI. Tech also recorded a team on-base percentage of .454.
- Jake DeLeo led all hitters with a .500 average, slugging 1.250 and reaching base at a .600 clip, only striking out once. He recorded six hits with three doubles and two home runs for three RBI.
- Also hitting .300 was Stephen Reid (.444), Kristian Campbell (.364), Jadyn Jackson (.333), Jack Rubenstein (.333), Jackson Finley (.333), Angelo Dispigna (.300) and Nicholas Romano (.300).
- Tech had six arms record a weekend ERA of 0.00 against Clemson – Dawson Brown, Jackson Vaughan, Terry Busse, Noah Samol, Aeden Finateri and Demitri Diamant.
