The Yellow Jackets hung more runs on the Tigers than any previous opponent

THE FLATS – Despite hanging more runs on No. 5 Clemson (31-1, 8-0 ACC) than any of the Tigers’ previous opponents, Georgia Tech softball (16-14, 2-6 ACC) fell 8-4 to the visiting side on Saturday at Mewborn Field. Trailing early, the Yellow Jackets bounced back with a three-run fifth inning to even the tally, but were unable to keep pace in the final two frames.

Sophomore outfielder Ella Edgmon shined through the evening as she made a diving grab in center field to keep Clemson off the board in the top of the first, then knocked an RBI infield single to break the Tigers’ shutout in the fifth.

Junior utility player Sara Beth Allen led the White and Gold at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run. The dinger marked her seventh of the season and eighth of her career as she now leads the squad in the category. Sophomore outfielder Madison Dobbins also had a solid day at the dish, knocking her team-leading seventh double on the year as she also went 2-for-3.

Four Yellow Jackets took the circle through the night in senior Chandler Dennis, sophomore Sophia Voyles, sophomore Kinsey Norton and senior Blake Neleman. Dennis got the start, tossing the first two innings, while Voyles (2-3) shouldered the lion’s share of the load, receiving the loss after an effective 4.1 innings of work.

Clemson struck first in the top of the second, climbing aboard with an RBI single. The Tigers tacked on another pair in the third, opening the frame with back-to-back solo jacks to move ahead, 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Georgia Tech broke through, using small ball to rack up three runs without an extra base hit. Singles and sacrifices knotted the tally as junior first baseman Abby Hughes and sophomore designated player Bailey Chapin opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Following a sac bunt that moved the runners into scoring position, Edgmon’s single plated the first run for the White and Gold. Senior catcher Emma Kauf put the ball in play to score the next run, and a sac fly by junior third baseman Mallorie Black tied the game at 3 apiece.

Clemson reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth, belting a two-run blast for a 5-3 advantage. In the bottom half, Tech responded with a home run of its own as Allen launched a solo shot over the scoreboard in left to cut the lead to one.

The Tigers made their final push in the top of the seventh, opening the inning with a solo bomb and later adding another pair by way of an RBI single and a fielder’s choice that moved the visitors further ahead, 8-4. The Jackets were held in check in their final opportunity at the plate, resulting in the Clemson victory.
