THE FLATS – Georgia Tech freshman Alejandra Cruz was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Freshman of the Week after collecting a trio of wins this past weekend. She shares the honor with Notre Dame’s Bojana Pozder.
Collecting her second weekly award this season, Cruz continued her impressive freshman campaign, helping Georgia Tech to a pair of 6-1 wins last weekend over Boston College and Syracuse. Cruz went undefeated against the Eagles and Orange, picking up two singles wins and a doubles victory. The Mexico City, Mexico native pocketed Tech’s only doubles win against Boston College on Friday with partner Kylie Bilchev before clinching the win in singles, cruising to a straight-set victory over Seren Agar. She followed with a dominating singles performance on Sunday, pocketing a 6-3, 6-0 win over Syracuse’s Miyuka Kimoto.
This season, Cruz has put together a 9-4 dual singles record and is 5-3 against ACC opponents. At the No. 4 position, the freshman is 8-1 in dual match play. With doubles partner, Bilchev, the pair own an 8-4 dual record.
Cruz jumped back into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings on Tuesday, coming in at No. 105 in singles and No. 69 in doubles with Bilchev.
Georgia Tech returns to the courts on Thursday, March 23 welcoming UCF. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
