CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Georgia Tech cut it to a two-point game with less than a minute to play, but could not pull out a victory at Miami, falling 64-58 in the Watsco Center on Sunday. Three Yellow Jackets finished in double-figures led by Cameron Swartz with 19 points on the day.
It was a highly competitive first half with Miami (15-8, 8-4 ACC) holding the lead the majority of the opening 20 minutes. The Hurricanes stretched their lead out to as many as 10 points early in the second quarter following a triple from Hanna Cavinder, but the Yellow Jackets came out of the media break with a mission and slowly chipped away at their deficit. Over the final four minutes and 52 seconds of the half, Tech put together a 13-4 run, fueled by five points from Nerea Hermosa and a triple at the buzzer from Tonie Morgan to setup a 30-29 halftime Miami lead.
Kara Dunn opened the third quarter draining a three-pointer to put Tech on top, 32-30, but the teams traded buckets back-and-forth and stood knotted at 36-36 with 5:17 to play. Miami retook a five-point lead, but Swartz converted a four-point play to bring the Jackets within 41-40 with 3:53 on the clock. The Hurricanes would continue to hold a steady lead through the fourth quarter, leading 58-52 with 3:58 to play before Swartz closed the gap to 58-56 as time wound down to 54.2 seconds left to play. Jasmyne Roberts converted a layup and Cavinder connected on four three throws to setup a 64-56 Miami advantage, and Swartz hit 2-of-3 from the charity stripe to account for the final score.
