Tech Falls at Boston College, 74-62

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Georgia Tech had three players in double-figures, but wasn’t able to overcome Boston College as the Yellow Jackets dropped a 74-62 decision in Conte Forum Sunday to open Atlantic Coast Conference play. The loss moved Tech to 8-3 overall and 0-1 in league action.

The Yellow Jackets offensively struggled in the first quarter, allowing Boston College to build a double-digit lead in the opening 10 minutes. Tech hit only four field goals in the first frame and shot 22.2 percent from the field as BC led 21-10 with a minute to play. The Jackets regrouped in the second quarter, cutting its deficit to four points following a Kara Dunn bucket at 4:38. After being held scoreless in the first quarter, Eylia Love led Tech with eight points in the second period. Tech was 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the frame, but BC held a 41-34 halftime lead using a late three-pointer and last second bucket.

Tech was held to three field goals in the third quarter as BC won the frame, 15-6, to lead 56-40 after 30 minutes. But the Jackets came alive in the fourth quarter, slowly attacking its deficit. Trailing 60-42 at 7:56, Avyonce Carter ignited a 14-3 Tech run over three minutes, fueled by eight points from Cameron Swartz, to setup a 63-56 tally with 4:30 to play. The Eagles came out of the media break and answered every Tech effort to hold for a 74-62 win.

Three Yellow Jackets finished in double-figures led by Swartz with 14 points in her return to Conte Forum. Tonie Morgan and Dunn both added 11 points. Dunn and Nerea Hermosa secured a team-high seven rebounds each as the Jackets narrowly lost the rebounding battle, 47-46. Tech was plagued offensively, hitting only 28.2 percent (20-71) from the field for the second lowest shooting effort this season. Tech was nearly perfect at the free throw line, going 20-for-22 for a 90.9 percent clip.

Boston College finished at 41.9 percent (26-62) from the field led by 21 points from JoJo Lacey, 17 from Andrea Daley and 15 from Dontavia Waggoner. Daley and Taina Mair each produced double-doubles with 13 and 12 rebounds, respectively. Mair was two assists shy of a triple-double with eight as the Eagles recorded 18 assists in the game.

Georgia Tech faces a quick turnaround, welcoming Furman to McCamish Pavilion on Wednesday, Dec. 21 for its final non-conference tilt. Tip is slated for 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

Competitive Drive Initiative

In a unified endeavor, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation, Georgia Tech athletics and the Alexander-Tharpe Fund have come together to accelerate funding for student-athlete scholarships with the launch of the Competitive Drive Initiative. The initiative met its initial fundraising goal of $2.5 million in less than six weeks and has extended its target to $3.5 million raised by Dec. 31. Any new gift to the A-T Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund made through Dec. 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Georgia Tech Foundation, meaning that if the $3.5 million fundraising goal is met, the matching gift would result in a $7 million impact for Georgia Tech athletics.
