No. 5 Tech Flies Past Dayton

The Yellow Jackets sweep their second straight opponent of the season

THE FLATS – No. 5 Georgia Tech volleyball (3-0) got off to a dominant start in its home hosted GT Invitational on Friday, sweeping Dayton (2-3) in its first official home match of the 2022 campaign. The Yellow Jackets won both of the first two sets by double digits, cruising to a 75-48 overall point advantage (25-15, 25-14, 25-19).

Tech controlled the match across the board, holding an edge in kills (42-31), hitting percentage (.365-.122), assists (39-27), aces (5-3) and digs (42-25).

Senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann continues to lead the way for the White and Gold as she tallied a match high 16 kills at a .448 clip to go with seven digs, a pair of blocks and a pair of aces. Not far behind Bergmann was the other third remaining from last season’s trio of Killer B’s, sophomore outside hitter Bianca Bertolino. The Argentinian totaled nine kills, a match high 12 digs and two blocks. Junior setter Bella D’Amico orchestrated Tech’s attack, leading the match with 28 assists.

How it Happened

The Flyers managed to hang with the Jackets midway through the first set, answering a pair of Tech’s three-point runs by drawing within a point at 15-14. Georgia Tech was surgical for the rest of the set, picking apart Dayton to take 10 of the final 11 points and secure a 25-15, set one win.

The White and Gold steadily built up a lead in the second set, using bursts of two and three points to reach an 11-5 advantage. A six-point run to follow put the set out of reach for the Flyers as the Jackets moved ahead 17-6, finishing out their second double digit set victory by a final score of 25-14 in set two.

Georgia Tech was streaky early in set three, opening the set by taking the first four points and going on a five-point run headlined by three Bergmann kills shortly after for an 11-4 lead.  The two sides would trade blows from there, but the advantage allowed the Jackets to keep a distance of four or more points, rolling onto a 25-19 third set win and match sweep iced by a drive through the middle from senior middle blocker Erin Moss.

The Jackets will host day two of the GT Invitational, taking on Arizona State at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
