Bergmann Powers Tech Past Ole Miss, 3-1

Julia Bergmann’s career-high 33 kills led the Jackets to their first win of the season

OXFORD, Miss. – Senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann propelled No. 9 Georgia Tech volleyball to a season-opening, 3-1 victory over Ole Miss (13-25, 26-24, 28-26, 27-25) on Friday. The vaunted attacker racked up a career-high 33 kills in the match, surpassing 1,200 career kills in the process.

Bergmann’s 33 kills tie for the fifth most in a single match in program history as only four former Yellow Jackets on seven separate occasions had previously achieved the feat. The Brazilian bomber matched her attacking volume with efficiency, posting a .459 hitting percentage on the day. Along with pitching in on the defensive end with eight digs and a pair of blocks, the decorated Yellow Jacket also served up her 131st career ace, tying Amanda Medrow (1996-99) for eighth in the Tech record books.

How it Happened

Georgia Tech got off to a slow start in the first set, falling behind early as Ole Miss rode its early momentum onto a 25-13 victory.

The Yellow Jackets woke up in the second set, recovering from another hot start by the Rebels to take a 12-10 lead following a four-point run. As the two sides traded blows, Bergmann came through with a crucial, three-point run of kills to move Tech ahead, 22-17. The Rebels would climb back to push the set to extra points, but the White and Gold finished things off with a block by Bergmann and senior middle blocker Erin Moss for a 26-24 win in set two.

Tech caught fire in the third set, creating the set’s first separation with a seven-point run out to a 16-10 lead. Ole Miss bounced back once more to force extra points, but the Jackets would hold strong as Moss put an exclamation point on the set with a kill from the middle, securing a 28-26 set three victory.

The White and Gold carried momentum into the fourth set, starting off with a 6-1 run to open the set. The Yellow Jackets would keep their distance out to a 17-13 lead, but the Rebels clawed back until knotting things up at 22 apiece. The set would carry over into extra points for the third consecutive time, but Georgia Tech rallied one final time with a three-point run to secure a 27-25 set four win and 3-1 match win.
