No. 18 Tigers Escape Jackets in Extras

Tech falls shy in eighth extra-inning outing on season

CLEMSON, S.C. – Georgia Tech softball (36-15, 11-13 ACC) was edged by No. 18 Clemson (37-14, 14-10 ACC) in extras, 3-2, pushing the Tigers to the brink in the series finale on Sunday at McWhorter Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets kept the Tiger bats at bay for the majority of the afternoon and made the most of their opportunities with runners on, but were unable to hang on in the eighth.

Junior hurler Chandler Dennis got the start in the circle, tossing 2 2/3 innings and allowing one earned run on three hits while adding three strikeouts. Senior right hander Lexi Ray put forth a strong effort in relief, giving up just one hit in 3 1/3 innings of work. Junior slinger Blake Neleman tossed the final 1 1/3 innings, surrendering one run with a punchout.

At the plate, senior second baseman Bailee Zeitler led the way with an RBI single while sophomore catcher Sandra Beth Pritchett picked up a single of her own.

Softball vs. Clemson

Clemson got its bats going in the bottom of the third, using a two-RBI double to slip ahead, 2-0. Georgia Tech rallied back in the top of the fifth, knotting things up at two apiece. The Yellow Jackets led off the inning with a walk and a following single by Pritchett to break up a perfect game. Zeitler then put Tech on the board with an RBI single to shallow left before senior right fielder Kennedy Cowden knocked a sac fly to right, scoring freshman pinch runner Madison Dobbins to even things up.

Neither side managed to cross the plate for the final two innings of regulation, but the Tigers slapped an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to come away with a 3-2 win.

Game Notes

  • The extra-inning outing marked Tech’s eighth of the season.
  • Ray finished the series tossing seven scoreless innings with three strikeouts and three hits allowed for a flawless ERA through three appearances.
