Tech allows just one hit, Kauf enters program history

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (31-12, 11-10 ACC) stymied NC State (28-18, 5-13 ACC) once more at the plate for a 5-1 victory on Saturday at Mewborn Field, clinching its second ACC series sweep of the season.

Already coming into the weekend ranked second in the nation in doubles, junior catcher Emma Kauf entered a four-way tie for fourth place in program history in doubles in a season, lacing her 18th of the year.

Junior right hander Chandler Dennis stifled the Wolfpack bats through the day, tossing her sixth complete game of the season as she allowed just one run on one hit while tallying six strikeouts and knocking down NC State in order in five of her seven innings of work.

Three Yellow Jackets in Kauf, sophomore shortstop Jin Sileo and freshman left fielder Auburn Dupree led Tech at the dish, each going 2-for-3. Meanwhile, graduate first baseman Tricia Awald had the most impactful swing of the day in a two-run dinger to front the squad in RBI.

Softball vs. NC State

Georgia Tech plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the second. Following a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles from Sileo and Dupree to load the bases, a miscue by NC State’s catcher allowed Sileo to slip home. The White and Gold sent in two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Dupree got the Jackets started with a bunt single before back-to-back RBI doubles courtesy of sophomore third baseman Mallorie Black and Kauf moved Tech ahead 3-0.

The Wolfpack got one back in the top of the fifth, scoring on a fielder’s choice, but the Yellow Jackets responded with Awald’s two-run moon shot. Dennis would retire the side in the top of the seventh, cementing Tech’s 5-1 game three triumph and series sweep.

  • Tech picked up its second ACC home series sweep of the season.
  • With the sweep, the Jackets have won four ACC series this season.
  • Georgia Tech has won six of its last seven games.
  • Following the series sweep, the Jackets are now 20-6 at home this year.
  • Awald demolished her 43rd career home run, taking the team lead with her seventh of the season.
  • Kauf concluded her phenomenal series going 7-for-8 with two doubles and a triple.
  • Kauf is currently tied for fourth in program history with 18 doubles on the year, joining Jen Yee (2009), Kelsi Weseman (2010) and Breanna Roper (2019) with the same mark. Kauf came into the weekend with 16, good for second in the NCAA.
  • Dennis earned her 13th win of the season on the day, now leading the team.
  • The complete game one-hitter marked her second of the season.

Georgia Tech will play its rescheduled home contest against Troy (25-13, 11-7 SBC)  on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Mewborn Field. The game will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
