THE FLATS – After a nail-biting Opening Day, No. 11 Georgia Tech baseball showcased the power of its lineup, defeating Wright State 16-5 and clinching its season-opening series on Saturday afternoon at Mac Nease Baseball Park.
The Yellow Jackets (2-0) blasted five home runs on the day, getting the power bats from Tres Gonzalez, Stephen Reid, Nicholas Romano and Drew Compton, who finished with two on the day – one from each side of the plate.
Offensively, Tech had two 3-for-3 days in Andrew Jenkins and Compton. Also providing multiple hits was Chandler Simpson, Kevin Parada and John Anderson. Anderson broke the game open with a bases-clearing double in the first inning to give the Jackets a resounding lead.
RHP Zach Maxwell went the first 3.0 innings, fanning five and surrendering just two hits and two runs before LHP Josiah Siegel (1-0) delivered the shutdown middle third, pitching a hitless 3.0 innings with four strikeouts.
After the score was 14-2, Tech was able to use show off some of its young arms, including LHP Camron Hill, LHP Cody Carwile and RHP Xander Stephens.
The Raiders (0-2) were led by Drew Baker, who had a three-RBI double, while starter RHP Jake Shirk (0-1) received the loss.
Georgia Tech returns for the opening weekend finale against Wright State on Sunday, Feb. 20 at Mac Nease Baseball Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and WREK 91.1 FM.
Postgame Notes:
- Georgia Tech mashed five home runs for the first time since the 2021 Nashville Regional against Indiana State;
- Drew Compton hit a home run as a left-handed hitter and a right-handed hitter for the second time in the last four games (vs. Indiana State, 2021 Regional);
- Freshman Nicholas Romano became the fourth Yellow Jacket since 2015 to hit a home run in their first career plate appearance, joining teammate Drew Compton (2020), Michael Guldberg (2018) and Blake Jackson (2015);
- After dominating Friday night with 17 strikeouts, Georgia Tech was much more democratic on Saturday, forcing eight ground balls, eight flyouts and a double play to end the game.
