Hot-Shooting Jackets Down Lamar, 75-66

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s basketball used red-hot shooting from long-distance to defeat Lamar University, 75-66, on Monday night at McCamish Pavilion.

The Yellow Jackets (2-1) shot 48 percent (12-of-25) from downtown and 45.2-percent shooting from the field to rush out to a 22-point lead, including a overwhelming 15-0 run in the first half.

The Cardinals (1-2) struggled mightily offensively in the first half, getting held to 33.3 percent shooting from the field and 2-of-9 (22.2 percent) shooting of 3-pointers.

Led by Jordyn Adams’ 11 second-half points, Lamar climbed to within four points late, but the Yellow Jackets’ relentless attack — that included 31 points off the bench and 13 second-chance points — was too much to overcome.

Tech was led by freshman Deebo Coleman’s game-high 19 points on the night, including 5-for-7 on 3-pointers. Michael Devoe and Jordan Usher continued stuffing the stat sheet as Devoe finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Usher recorded 15 points and eight rebounds — including four offensive boards.

Lamar’s Adams finished with 17 points overall on the night, with three rebounds and one assist.

Georgia Tech renews Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate next when it travels to archrival Georgia on Friday, Nov. 19. Tipoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. and will be broadcast live on SEC Network.

TEAM NOTES

• Tech finished the first half with a lineup of Smith, Devoe, Coleman, Miles Kelly and Khalid Moore (as the 5-man), and finished the game with Devoe, Sturdivant, Coleman, Moore and Usher on the floor.
• After hitting just four 3s in 17 attempts (all by Michael Devoe) against Miami, Georgia Tech has gone 21-of-44 in the last two games, including 12-of-25 against Lamar. Seven different players made at least one, all but the two 5-men (Howard and Jordan Meka). The Jackets went 9-of-19 against Stetson, with four different players connecting.
• Lamar was the first team to hit 40 percent from the floor against Georgia Tech this season (40.4 percent). The Yellow Jackets held Miami hit 39.1 percent, Stetson hit 35.0 percent.
• Tech used nine players in the game and seven scored. Tech’s bench has outscored that of its opponent in all three games this season (31-30 vs. Lamar, 34-21 vs. Stetson, 12-10 vs. Miami). The Jackets’ reserves outscored their opponents last year only six times, but won all six. The two highest bench point totals were 32 vs. Delaware State and 21 vs. Georgia State.
• Tech’s 10 turnovers were a season low, but Lamar had just eight. The Jackets have had more turnovers than their opponents in all three games so far.
• Tech has outrebounded each opponent this season by double-digits and have a plus 10.3 rebound margin collectively. The Jackets scored a season-best 13 second-chance points.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS

• Michael Devoe hit a 3 in his 13^th straight game dating back to last Feb. 10 vs. Virginia, and went 2-for-4 from distance against Lamar. The 2021 ACC Tournament MVP made at least one in 23 of 26 games last season, including the final 10 in a row.
• Devoe’s overall stat line was 11 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists with just 1 turnover. This season, the 6-5 senior is averaging 18.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists, all career high averages so far. He has 16 assists and 6 turnovers through three games.
• Devoe has reached double figures in 13 straight games as well, with that Virginia game being the last time he didn’t, and has done so 62 times in his career.
• Dallan “Deebo” Coleman hit his first four 3-point attempts and went 5-of-7 from distance in the game. He hit his first four long ball attempts against Stetson and went 4-for-6 from distance in that game. He is 9-of-14 for the season
• Coleman scored a game-high 19 points against Lamar and is averaging 11.7 for the season.
• Dating back to the final six games of the 2020-21 season, Jordan Usher is averaging 14.8 points per game, hitting double figures in nine straight games. His low point over that stretch was 12 points against Miami of Ohio. The 6-7 senior has averaged 13.7 points in three games this season.
• Usher gathered 9 more rebounds against Lamar and leads the Jackets with a 9.3 average this season, more than twice his average last year (4.2 rpg).
• Rodney Howard’s 9 points and 8 rebounds against Lamar gives him season averages of 7.0 points and 8.7 rebounds.
