No. 14 Jackets Sting Seminoles for 10th Consecutive Win

Tech bests Florida State as Brambilla makes Jacket history yet again

THE FLATS – No. 14 Georgia Tech volleyball flew past Florida State for a 3-1 victory (25-14, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16) on Sunday afternoon in O’Keefe Gymnasium, earning its 10th straight win in ACC play.

Senior right-side hitter Mariana Brambilla once again highlighted the match with a historic mark, this time etching her name in the Georgia Tech record books in kills. The explosive Brazilian’s 15 kills on the day propelled her into the top 10 in program history in career kills, bolting up to ninth all time with 1,459 to date.

Georgia Tech (21-3, 12-2 ACC) bested Florida State (17-6, 10-4 ACC) in all phases, leading the Seminoles in kills (65-40), hitting percentage (.374-.155), assists (59-36), aces (6-3), digs (61-45) and blocks (11-9).

The second half of the Brazilian bomb squad in junior outside hitter Julia Bergmann led the Jacket attack, piling up 20 kills and a pair of aces while pitching in defensively with nine digs and five total blocks (two solo, three assisted). Senior setter Matti McKissock was lights out once again setting up Tech’s offense, resulting in 51 assists to go with three total blocks (one solo, two assisted), four digs and a pair of kills. From the middle, junior Erin Moss was borderline unstoppable on the attack as she tallied 12 kills at a staggering, season-high .706 clip, adding a pair of block assists and a dig defensively. Senior middle blocker Breland Morrissette anchored the defense alongside Moss, leading the team with a season-high six block assists.

Tech’s 10 straight victories tie 2019’s 10-match winning streak, which the Jackets rode to an NIVC title in 2019. The Yellow Jackets have now won 32 of their last 36 matches in O’Keefe Gymnasium. Georgia Tech has also won 53 of its last 62 matches dating back to 2019.

How it Happened

The Jackets got off to a flaming start in the first set, going on an early stretch taking 10 of 11 points, resulting in an 11-3 lead. Tech kept its foot on the gas, piling on runs of three and four points up to a 17-8 lead and cruising on to an eventual 25-14 set one win as Bergmann and Morrissette stoned the Seminoles at the net to seal the victory.

The second set was tightly contested as the Jackets jumped in front 10-7, using a four-point run powered by three consecutive blocks to take the first significant advantage of the match. The Noles rebounded soon after, evening things up at 12 all. Tech then clapped back taking five of the next six points, moving back ahead 17-13. Florida State would draw within one, but Tech never surrendered the lead, rolling on to take the final two points as an ace from Brambilla capped the 25-22 set two win.

The third set also resulted in a back-and-forth battle as the Jackets used bursts of two and three points to incrementally build up an 11-7 lead. The two sides traded blows as the Seminoles crawled back to even the score at 15 all, later stringing together four points to lead 20-18. Georgia Tech would even things up three more times up to a deadlock at 23, but Florida State claimed the final two points to take a set back with a 25-23 set three win.

The Yellow Jackets reasserted their dominance in the fourth set, coming out with a vengeance claiming the first five points of the set. Tech used runs of three to push further ahead up to a 10-2 advantage and later a 15-8 lead, creating too much separation for the Noles to climb back. The Jackets charged ahead, taking the final three points of the set as McKissock clinched the 25-16 set win and match victory for the White and Gold with an ace.
