Tech Golf Tied for 5th at Windon Memorial

Lamprecht tied for 9th individually for No. 8 Yellow Jackets

Glencoe, Ill. – Christo Lamprecht fired rounds of 68 and 71 Monday and is tied for ninth place individually, while No. 8 Georgia Tech shot identical rounds of 281 in the morning and afternoon and is tied for fifth place at the Windon Memorial Classic.

While the Yellow Jackets completed their second round in the 36-hole day Monday, five teams were unable to complete round 2 at Lake Shore Golf Club as darkness fell. Notre Dame, South Florida and Marquette, the top three teams on the leaderboard, as well as Kent State and Cal Poly, will resume round 2 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time Tuesday morning. The final round will get underway at 9:15 a.m.

TECH LINEUP – Ben Smith and Connor Howe led the Yellow Jackets in the afternoon round, firing rounds of 67 (-4) and 69 (-2) while Tech shot 281 (-3). Lamprecht added an even-par 71 and Ross Steelman a 74 as Tech held its position on the leaderboard from the morning round.

Lamprecht and Steelman each shot 68 (-3) in the opening round, while Howe shot 71 and Bartley Forrester added a 74 as the Jackets posted an identical score of 281 to tie for fifth place.

Lamprecht grabbed a spot among the individual leaders from the start Monday, posting three birdies and an eagle in his morning round of 68. The sophomore from George, South Africa got to 5-under-par for the tournament when he birdied the par-3 14th in the afternoon, but bogeyed two of his last three holes to finish at 139 (-3), tied for ninth place.

Howe, a junior from Ogden, Utah, had four birdies and two bogeys in his afternoon 69 and is tied for 13th place at 2-under-par 140. Steelman, a junior from Columbia, Mo., is tied for 29th at even-par 142, while Smith, a senior from Novi, MIch., is tied for 47th at 144 (+2).

Seven of the 14 teams completed 36 holes under par.

TEAM LEADERBOARD – Notre Dame (-10), South Florida (-9) and Marquette (-7), the top three teams on the leaderboard, were still on the golf course when play was suspended Monday. Each team’s No. 5 player, had two holes to play, while the No. 1 player had five holes to play.

Washington was the leader in the clubhouse, having posted a 36-hole score of 561 (-7). Tech and Kansas are tied for fifth at 562 (-6), followed by host Northwestern (563, -5), all having finished their second rounds.

Kent State (-3) was in eighth place with its round still unfinished, while Michigan State was in the clubhouse at 566 (-2). Notre Dame’s Palmer Jackson and Marquette’s Hunter Eichhorn are also at 2-under-par, but have not completed their second rounds.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD – Washington’s R.J. Manke leads the medal race with a 36-hole score of 136 (-6) after posting a 65 in the afternoon. He is one shot ahead of Kansas’ Davis Cooper, who finished 36 holes at 5-under-par 137.

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION – The Yellow Jackets are competing in the Windon Memorial Classic for the first time. Northwestern University hosts the 14-team event, being held for the 24th time, at Lake Shore Golf Club (7,000 yards, par 71) on the banks of Lake Michigan. The teams will play 36 holes Monday and 18 holes Tuesday, utilizing a split-tee format and a shotgun start for each round.

Eight teams that competed in NCAA regionals last spring are in the field for the Windon, including Northwestern (host), Cal Poly, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kansas, Kent State, Marquette, Michigan State, North Florida, Notre Dame, Ohio State, South Florida, UC Davis and Washington.

 

In each round we had three good scores, but we didn’t get the fourth one we needed. There’s not a lot of separation (on the leaderboard) so if we can get that, we’re right there. It’s good golf course, not overly long but pretty demanding. We struggled with the pace of the greens and had too many three-putts today. They were smooth and fast. Ben had a great round in the afternoon under challenging conditions, great to see him rebound from a disappointing round in the morning.
