Compton homer not enough in 7-3 loss

THE FLATS – Drew Compton smashed a two-run homer in the fourth to cut it to one but No. 20 Georgia Tech baseball couldn’t hang on and fell 7-3 to Auburn on Tuesday night at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets (15-13) were held to just four hits overall, with Tres Gonzalez, Andrew Jenkins and Austin Wilhite joining the one-hit efforts. Gonzalez also drew two more walks to remain among the ACC’s leaders in bases on balls with 25 overall this season, while Luke Waddell scored the third run on a sac fly.

On the mound, true freshman RHP Marquis Grissom, Jr. (0-1) made his collegiate debut, needing just nine pitches to retire the side of his first inning. Despite also recording three strikeouts, three runs would ultimately score on three hits as he continues to work back from a preseason injury. In relief, LHP Dalton Smith steadied the game with three innings of one-hit, one-run baseball before Tech used four more pitchers on the night.

The Tigers (13-16) were led by Steven Williams, who went 2-for-4 with a double and home run on the game. On the mound, starter RHP Trace Bright (3-3) got the predetermined start and received the win with two runs allowed on three hits in 4.0 innings.

Georgia Tech returns to the road for a pivotal ACC Coastal Division series against Virginia Tech on April 16-18. First pitches are scheduled for 6 p.m., 3 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, with the series broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and WREK 91.1 FM.
