Callaway Foundation Commits $5M To AI 2020

THE FLATS –The Fuller E. Callaway Foundation has made a $5 million commitment to Georgia Tech’s Athletics Initiative 2020, director of athletics Todd Stansbury announced on Thursday.

The $5 million commitment is earmarked for the crown jewel of AI 2020’s facilities projects, the $70 million renovation of Georgia Tech’s athletics hub, the Edge Center.

With the generous support from the Callaway Foundation, more than $85 million has been raised towards AI 2020’s $125 million goal. Unveiled publicly in June 2018, AI 2020 aims to achieve its fundraising goal by Dec. 31, 2020.

“On behalf of Georgia Tech athletics, I thank the Fuller E. Callaway Foundation for their generous commitment to AI 2020,” Stansbury said. “The Callaway Foundation’s support has enriched Georgia Tech student-athletes for many years and through their latest commitment, they will continue to help develop future generations of young people who will change the world.”

The Callaway Foundation, based in LaGrange, Ga., boasts a longstanding and intimate connection with Georgia Tech and Georgia Tech athletics. The Callaway Plaza on the north end of Bobby Dodd Stadium and the Callaway Club in McCamish Pavilion have both been named in honor of the Callaway family.

Georgia Tech’s current Edge Center is named after Arthur B. Edge Jr., a Georgia Tech graduate (textile engineering, 1926) and close friend and associate of Fuller E. Callaway Jr., who also studied textile engineering at the Institute in the 1920s. Edge began his professional career as a draftsman with Callaway Mills Company in 1926 and retired as vice chairman of the board in 1968.

An active man in the LaGrange, Ga. civic and business circles, Edge was president of the Callaway Foundation, which was founded by Callaway Jr. and has provided financial support to Georgia Tech for decades.

“We hope this grant will enable Georgia Tech to build upon its standing as a premier university for both academics and athletics,” said Tripp Penn, president of the Callaway Foundation. “This institution was important in the life of our founder, Fuller E. Callaway Jr., and it continues to transform the lives of students from Troup County and around the world.”

A renovated Edge Center will provide personalized services to student-athletes, including academic, wellness and sports performance support, as well as programming to prepare students for professional careers. The Edge Center will also feature additional office and meeting spaces for athletics department staff and interactive opportunities for Georgia Tech students, fans and visitors.
