Pumputis Finishes Fifth in 200 IM at World Championships

 HANGZHOU, China – Georgia Tech swimmer Caio Pumputis began competition in the 14^th FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships on Monday evening and then well into Tuesday morning, representing his home country of Brazil at the Tennis Centre, Hangzhou Olympic & International Expo Center.

After finishing second in the 200 IM prelims with a blistering time of 1:53.33, the sophomore then battled to a fifth-place finish in the finals with a time of 1:53.05 – two seconds off the lead (Shun Wang (China)) and 0.32 seconds off medaling at the world championships. Pumputis broke out of the gates with a 24.66/28.55 over the first 100 before splitting 32.37/27.22 to finish with the seventh-fastest time in the world this year.

Pumputis will also compete in two more events for the World Championships – the 100 IM and the 200 breast on Wednesday evening. He also has a chance to compete in the 4x200m free relay on Thursday night.

The Yellow Jacket qualified for the World Championships by setting a new short course South American record in the 100 IM at the 2018 Jose Finkel Trophy (Brazil’s Short Course National Championship meet) in Sao Paulo, Brazil this summer. His record-setting performance ranked No. 1 in the world in 2018 at the time at 51.83 and ranked fifth overall on the year.

The 2018 FINA Short Course World Championships are live-streamed and televised live in the U.S. on NBC Sports Network, the Olympic Channel and NBCSports.com.
