Yellow Jackets rush for 542 yards, even record at 3-3 with big ACC road win

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Georgia Tech ran for 542 yards – the third-highest total in school history – and scored on nine-straight offensive possessions to start the game, en route to a 66-31 romp over Louisville on Friday evening at Cardinal Stadium.

With the victory, Georgia Tech (3-3, 1-2 ACC) snapped a seven-game losing streak in games played away from home. It was the Yellow Jackets’ first true road win since a 28-27 triumph at Georgia on Nov. 25, 2016.

Quarterback TaQuon Marshall led the way with 175 rushing yards and two touchdowns in less than three full quarters of action. His replacement, Tobias Oliver, ran for 103 yards and two more scores on just eight carries, giving Georgia Tech two quarterbacks with 100 rushing yards in the same game for the first time in program history.

Georgia Tech’s defense matched a season-high by forcing three turnovers in the victory. After creating only 10 takeaways all season in 2017, the Jackets have forced 13 turnovers in just six games this year.

The Yellow Jackets return to action next Saturday when they host Duke (4-1, 0-1 ACC) for a pivotal ACC Coastal Division showdown. Kickoff is set for 12:20 p.m. at Bobby Dodd Stadium (TICKETS).

  • Georgia Tech evened its record at 3-3 on the season and moved to 1-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
  • Georgia Tech snapped a seven-game losing streak in games played away from home and a six-game skid in true road games. The Yellow Jackets had not won away from home since a 33-18 win over Kentucky in the 2016 TaxSlayer Bowl (Dec. 31, 2016) and had not won a true road game since a 28-27 win at Georgia on Nov. 25, 2016.
  • Georgia Tech moved to 15-1 under head coach Paul Johnson (2008-pres.) in games against rotating opponents from the ACC Atlantic Division.
  • Georgia Tech moved to 8-0 away from home and 7-0 in true road games against rotating opponents from the Atlantic Division under Johnson.
  • Georgia Tech rushed for 542 yards, the third-highest total in school history.
  • Georgia Tech rushed for 500 yards or more for the sixth time in school history.
  • Georgia Tech rushed for 400 yards or more for the third time in six games this season, seventh time since the beginning of the 2017 season (17 games) and 24th time in 11 seasons under Johnson (135 games). Prior to Johnson’s arrival at GT in 2008, the Yellow Jackets had rushed for 400 yards in a game just eight times in school history.
  • Georgia Tech’s 66 points were the second-most that it has ever scored in an ACC game (record: 68 vs. North Carolina, Nov. 10, 2012).
  • Georgia Tech’s 21 first-quarter points and 31 first-half points were its most in any quarter and half against an ACC opponent since it scored 21 points in the second quarter and 35 points in the first half of a 56-23 win over NC State on Nov. 8, 2014.
  • Georgia Tech has scored 60-plus points in back-to-back games for the first time since wins over Alcorn State (69-6) and Tulane (65-10) to open the 2015 season.
  • A week after scoring on 8-of-10 offensive possessions in a 63-17 win over Bowling Green, Georgia Tech scored on 9-of-10 offensive possessions on Friday. Georgia Tech scored on its first nine offensive possessions on Friday, with its only non-scoring possession coming when it ran out the clock to end the game.

Individual Notes

  • Georgia Tech senior quarterback TaQuon Marshall rushed for a season-high 175 yards (prev.: 113 at USF, Sept. 8). It was the second-highest rushing total of his career, behind only his GT quarterback-record 249 yards in his first-career start against Tennessee on Sept. 4, 2017.
  • Marshall ran for two touchdowns, giving him multiple touchdown runs in 3-of-6 games this season, six of the last 12 games and 8-of-17 games as a starter.
  • Georgia Tech redshirt freshman quarterback Tobias Oliver ran for a career-high 103 yards on eight carries (12.9 avg.) after replacing Marshall in the third quarter two rushing touchdowns.
  • With Marshall’s 175 rushing yards and Oliver’s 103, Georgia Tech had two quarterbacks each rush for 100 yards in the same game for the first time in school history.
  • Oliver ran for two touchdowns. In limited action as Marshall’s backup this season, Oliver has seven rushing touchdowns, good for second on the team behind Marshall’s nine.
  • Georgia Tech senior A-back Qua Searcy had two rushing touchdowns, good for the second multi-touchdown game of his career (prev.: rushing TD and receiving TD vs. Tulane on Sept. 12, 2015).
  • Georgia Tech senior defensive end Anree Saint-Amour forced two fumbles (both recovered by GT). He had three forced fumbles in 35 career games coming into Friday’s game.
  • Georgia Tech true freshman place kicker Wesley Wells made the first field-goal attempt of his career, a 41-yarder. The 41-yard field goal was Georgia Tech’s longest since Brenton King made a 42-yarder vs. Wake Forest on Oct. 21, 2017.
