THE FLATS – With four starters returning from a team that finished the spring ranked No. 6 in the nation, including three All-Atlantic Coast Conference performers, Georgia Tech’s golf team has been ranked No. 7 in the Bushnell Golfweek Preseason Coaches’ poll announced Friday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Head coach Bruce Heppler welcomes back four of the Yellow Jackets’ five starters won the program’s 17th Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and competed in the NCAA Raleigh Regional – juniors Andy Ogletree (Little Rock, Miss.), Luke Schniederjans (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Tyler Strafaci (Davie, Fla.), as well as sophomore Noah Norton (Chico, Calif.). Norton, Schniederjans and Strafaci all made the All-ACC team last spring, while Norton was named to the Golf Coaches’ Association’s national all-freshman team.
That core of players also helped the Jackets win three other events last year, including the Carpet Capital Collegiate, the Franklin American Mortgage Collegiate at The Grove and the General Hackler Championship. They all finished the spring ranked in the nation’s top 100 as ranked by Golfstat and combined for eight top-10 finishes. Norton, Ogletree and Strafaci qualified for the U.S. Amateur, while Strafaci advanced to match play.
They’ll be joined by senior James Clark (Columbus, Ga.), who redshirted last year after earning All-ACC honors in 2017, and a pair of redshirt freshmen in Will Dickson (Providence, R.I.) and Ben Smith (Novi. Mich.). Heppler also welcomes three highly regarded freshmen – Bartley Forrester of Gainesville, Ga., Connor Howe of Ogden, Utah, and Luka Karaulic of Dacula, Ga.
