TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Jose Muguruza won the Stallings single consolation draw title to lead Georgia Tech on the final day of the Crimson Tide Fall Championships on the Varsity Courts in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Mugurza made quick work of his opponent on Sunday, earning a 6-0, 6-2, straight-set victory over Abe Souza of Illinois. After losing his first match of the weekend, Muguruza stormed back to pick up three victories and the consolation title.
“Jose played his best match of the fall today,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “He beat a very good player. This was an encouraging sign for things to come.”
In the Hannah singles consolation draw, freshman Doug Kenny dropped his finals match to Hank Grant of Samford, 7-5, 6-2. After losing a very close first set, Kenny lost his momentum and ultimately fell to Grant.
In doubles play, the tandem of Kenny and George Gvelesiani were crowned Tide doubles consolation draw champions by a walkover when Chris Duke and Joey Unkenholz of Jacksonville State decided to not play the match.
